Critical Illness Insurance VS General Medical Insurance

In general, critical illness insurance policies cover three core conditions, including cancer, stroke and heart attack. The insured will get a payout if diagnosed with the conditions covered by the policy whereas general medical insurance will reimburse all or part of the medical expenses incurred.

Critical Illness Insurance

  • Claims: One-off or multiple payout
  • Coverage: Mainly cancer, stroke and heart attack
  • General Medical Insurance

  • Claims: Compensate for out-of-pocket medical expenses
  • Coverage: All of or part of hospital treatment fees
  • Critical Illness Insurance Points to Note

    Age Restrictions

The insured must be between 15 days- 60/65 years old. If you are planning to purchase a critical illness cover for your newborn or parents, don’t forget to check the terms and conditions of the plan.

    Coverage

Critical illness cover will pay out if the insured is diagnosed with one of the defined medical conditions listed in the policy. However, it is important to note that not all conditions are covered and the policy will also state how serious the condition must be. What’s covered and what’s excluded are set out in the policy details, so it is important to spend time reading them.

    Cancer Recurrence

Most of the policy only pays out once and then the policy will end. However, some companies such as Blue WeCare Critical Illness Protection Plan 1 covers cancer recurrence.

Critical Illness Insurance Plan with Investment VS Critical Illness Insurance Plan without Investment

If you want to get cheaper critical illness insurance, you can choose a critical illness insurance plan without investment. But this plan usually does not provide lifetime protection. For example, Blue WeCare Critical Illness Protection Plan 1 is a critical illness insurance plan without investment, covering cancer, heart attack and stroke for a monthly income of only HK$100/ month.

    Critical Illness Insurance FAQ

How much critical illness insurance do I need?

It should be 2-3X of your annual income to replace your income because you probably can’t work because of long-term sickness for at least 2-3 years.

Should I get critical illness insurance for my children?

Yes, serious conditions can happen to anyone, regardless of age. The premium for children is usually much cheaper. Moreover, parents can choose critical illness cover with saving. In this way, it can save money for them and provide life-time protection for them at the same time.

Is the waiting period of critical illness cover different from the other insurance plan?

Yes, the waiting period of critical illness cover is usually longer than other insurance plans. The former is usually 90 days while the latter is 30 days.
